Batter and Banter Quiz : Results and next date

Our FUNd Raiser of Saturday 7 October

We are delighted  to announce that the Eighth Banter & Batter Quiz held in the Village Hall on the evening of 7 October was a great success, raising £580 for the Holcot Village Hall Association. This was despite a late fall in numbers by two teams, due to illness etc. An excellent result, raising around £50 more than last year’s event despite missing those other regular teams who we hope to see again next year. Some of you may have noticed the smart new tables which were bought with funds raised at our previous quizzes.

Special thanks to those quizzers who were unable to attend at the time who kindly donated their £10 ticket cost or were quizzers who did not have a meal but gave their £5 meal cost, raising £105 toward the total. This kindness was most appreciated.

The next Banter & Batter Quiz is planned for Saturday 10 March 2018 so please make a note of the date and reserve your place with Jackie & Deryck on 01604 781131. The quizzes are usually a sell-out with places being limited to 14 tables of 6 quizzers, so don’t delay and get your names down today. This is something to put in your traditional diary, calendar or handy ‘iPlanner’ to look forward to at the end of the winter ahead!

The ‘Friends of Holcot Playing Field’ charity will benefit from next spring’s Ninth Banter & Batter Quiz. The Friends are raising funds to replace the old play equipment removed from the village playground area with new (expensive) modern play equipment to benefit our village’s children into the future,

Finally, thank you to all who came along to help put the FUN back into FUNd raising. SEE YOU IN THE SPRING! YOU BET!

(Personally, I liked the Cryptic Phrases Picture Round which was ‘downright ‘ excellent and who knew that the Hickory tree grew Pecan Nuts anyway?…… Deryck)

Kind regards

Jackie & Deryck Watson

Christmas : Fayre in aid of the Playing Field improvements

The Friends of Holcot Playing Field are organising a Christmas fayre and Santa’s grotto in the village hall on 10 December from 2pm to 6pm.

It is £10 for a stall, plus they are asking for those with stalls to make a donation to a raffle.

Details are being finalised, but there will be a Santa’s grotto and games, and there are already some great stalls booked.

The Facebook event link is here – please like, share and comment. You can also see details of stalls that are already confirmed.

Contact Jackie Fountain ( or Lisa Callan ( for tables, further information or with offers of help.

Playing field improvement : fundraising is ongoing

As you are aware, a few ladies in the village have formed a ‘Friends of Holcot Playing Field’ group, in an attempt to raise enough funds to give the playground a much needed overhaul.  The ladies have been looking at various avenues of fundraising, so far they have raised over £1000. They have discovered a way that everyone in the parish could help.

The ‘Friends of Holcot Playing Field’ have asked that I remind you that they have recently registered for easyfundraising.  They would like to ask residents and their friends and family to please help raise money for the playing field by using the easy funding website when shopping online, and signing up for free.

Instead of going directly to the retailer website, log into  or download the easy fundraising app.  You will then be asked to choose the cause you wish to support.  Please search for ‘Friends of Holcot Playing Field’, and then you will be taken to the retailer’s website where you shop as you normally would (there are over 3000 retailers on board, including shops such as Amazon, John Lewis, Waitrose and other supermarkets, etc).  Because you visited  first, the retailer will then make a free donation to your cause.

This will not cost you anything, only a couple of minutes of your time to register once.  Don’t forget to go through easyfundraising every time you shop online.

The Friends of Holcot Playing Field really need your help and support, which would be very much appreciated.

If you have any questions or would like to get involved, please contact Lisa Callan ( or Jackie Fountain (
